The state of the village is dire enough that spirits will be more open to quick and dirty pacts, although if characters want to continue that bond after the whole mess is sorted they'll have to seek out the spirits to let them know that hey, it doesn't have to be a one-night-stand or anything.

The time for this bond will still vary from spirit to spirit, like it normally does- Nala is easier to bond with than Hyt, for example. And those new to these connections might have difficulty controlling the magic, though for this event the spirits will be especially helpful with that.
