The wings are essentially a physical manifestation of the ties characters have to the world, and as such, passing through the portal to leave the world will erase them regardless of size. A bit traumatizing for those who've always had them, yes, but it is thankfully a painless process 8D;

Actually, wing loss is part of why a lot of NPCs will be opting to stay behind even given the choice to leave.
