I know the feeling of the backlog there, mine is huge too, though not so huge as far as handhelds go since I usually am better about finishing those.
Kinda a lengthy explanation, and I really glossed over it big time in my app to avoid too much spoilers. If you just want to see a video, here's a link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6hrhuWByc0).
But the gist is, after the first ending, there's a bit with Arek, he uses the Dual Blade to send Erim back in time, with her memories of what happened the first time to go through the whole thing again. Second playthrough does have some added lines due to this. Everything overall runs the same, but one major thing, Erim's normal battle is unwinnable, she's killed by Daos by being stabbed in the back with Dual Blade. You go and beat Daos, he pulls his nasty stunt of trying to drop Doom Island onto Parcelyte, though to torment Maxim and Selan more, he sends the others back to die there.
They get sent to the core by Erim, as in the original Maxim goes to destroy the energy cores. Erim does tell him in advance that the only way he can save Parcelyte is to basically use up all his energy to destroy them (and he would die afterwards). He and Selan go forward and in the original ending, Maxim and Selan die to save Parcelyte.
Well, in the alternate ending, before Maxim and Selan go to destroy the last crystal, Erim comes back, she makes sure Maxim knows it is Erim, not Iris (they actually have very different energy in the DS version, even Daos is clueless for most of the game) and forces Maxim to actually fight and kill her or else he will die and so will all in Parcelyte.
Instead it was actually Iris faking it, she knew that the energy Maxim would expend battling her would be enough to destroy the core too. She dies at his hands but just before she does, she teleports Selan and Maxim, basically exchanging her life for theirs and the credits is her floating around the world and seeing stuff like Maxim and Selan do in the original ending (I took her just before the credits, basically after she sends Maxim home, before she vanishes).
So basically she gave her life so Maxim could lead a happy life as a father and husband with Selan and their son. If that's not love, don't know what is. Yeah, she tricked Maxim, but she knew full well he wouldn't accept her sacrifice otherwise because he absolutely would not fight her.
