John could probably be on the shifters hunting group or the clearing group, what with his medical background, but he's quite efficient and taking people out at a distance.

OKAY. For Bones, I think he'll mainly be in the defensive group although this might switch to offensive at some point since he wants to keep an eye on a few people and protect them. He probably doesn't figure that his phaser will be affected by the shifters, so finding out at the worst possible time might be funny.
