Actually, there are a couple of points that were brought up in favour of this new field when we were discussing it as a team. Let me give you a quick rundown:
* We assume thought and care already goes into a player's canon point choice, and asking for this explanation invites the player to share those thoughts with us. It helps us at least briefly access the mental process a player is using when they later on make their arguments for characterization.
* It is especially helpful for apps where we don't know the canon and will be canon-reviewing especially for that app during that cycle. Sometimes we don't automatically know that someone saying "Season 4 Episode 8" translates out to, say, the moment after a character's best friend was kidnapped (which would of course influence characterization in turn).
* Ultimately, we added it because it's not really asking for much. A couple sentences will suffice, and in cases were canon points are tricky or where revisions are likely to be requested, allowing players to have this chance to explain their reasoning will (in the long run) expedite the application process.
