Or if she casts it and gets hit by an arrow, you could have it bounce off, or get stuck in an invisible shield and then fall as said shield breaks.
And then for the stat boosts, you can consider it like buying a level of a skill in Suikoden 3. So like I gave her cast 2, if she has a C rating in magic, that would bump it to a B, but it would be for all magic, not just certain runes. So one that boosts speed could also give like multiple hits, move faster in a turn, etc. Mostly up to you on how you want to translate things, but I'm happy to suggest since I'm familiar enough with Suikoden III to know how to translate some things.
