Everyone's free to feel good (if you want to)

Hello everyone! Now that apps are mostly finished, it’s time to give you all a little overview of what’s waiting for the coming cycle. Usually we don’t announce things quite so in advance, but there are a few things we want to get done. So let’s roll right into it.

First off, Add/Removes!

Drop those all into the Admin Console and you’ll be on your way!

1. As you probably already noticed, Emily has stepped down from modding. We appreciate everything she’s done for us the last two and a half years. Before this cycle is over, we’ll be asking for someone to step up to join the team. What we’re really looking for more than anything is someone who is willing to engage and help run the plot by bringing in some new ideas and energy. If that sounds like something you’re interested in doing, stay tuned!

2. At the end of August, we’ll have a follow up post for whichever door is voted for. After that, you’ll have some time to figure out what to do with whatever’s made available with that room and make ready to pick the next door, either by letting us use the second place winner or running a new poll for the remaining winners.

3. That leads us to what’s up next! As you know, Luceti turned five this year and lately we’ve been drawing on its history to put some new twists on old events or ideas. We started with the draft on TERRACE, taken from a bit of forgotten Luceti history and previously did the possession event. Well, now we’re going to do another old favorite:

The Luceti Valley Event.

Sort of! While it’s indeed going to be another event where characters will have their memories replaced of having lived all their lives in Luceti, it’s not going to be a retread of Luceti Valley. We’re going to be giving you an entirely new setting with its own history to work with, some different constraints to work with, and a much darker twist than last time around. We won’t say what it is just yet, but it will have this event end with a struggle to save the village.

As the event draws closer, we’ll give you more information about what will go down. For now, we’ll start you with an overview so you can start forming ideas for your AU.

Welcome to Luceti Valley, a peaceful suburb set in an American 1950s era that harkens to the genre of “Leave it to Beaver” and “The Honeymooners”. In fact, you may remember this being a poll option when we polled you guys for what event you wanted. This one came in second place, so we set it aside to be more fully realized and finally have it ready for you. This is the sort of town with clean streets, white picket fences, and a close-knit neighborhood. Its the idyllic paradise where the nuclear family of parents and their 2.5 kids are the expected norm. Here people don’t fight in wars, but have respectable jobs like being bankers, mailmen, store clerks, and housewives.

However, Luceti Valley isn’t quite the peaceful haven it was last time around. This town has a much more obvious economy and though people do their jobs to put dinner on the table, the town is plagued with its own troubles. At the heart of it is the age old problem of class and rank. One hundred years ago, the valley was the home of peaceful villagers who occupied this land as a simple agrarian people. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. That all changed when the Catherians invaded. The country fell under their rule and those descended from the conquerors became the aristocracy. Those that didn’t became the working class. So it has been ever since. While the two groups are able to work together, such a power division always comes with a little resentment on both sides. Over time, a middle class has developed, resulting from the industrialization and the rare intermarriage of the former Catherians and the original villagers. While the original villagers usually have more menial jobs, the middle class takes on roles such as bankers, farmers, etc.

Fast forward to modern day and the town faces other problems. Although the town has industrialized, it still relies on its farms north of the town to support it with its yearly yield of crops. The last month has led to a devastating crop and a poor yield for the year. If that wasn’t enough, the town has entered its third month of a prolonged strike with the local factory, the Malnosso Textiles Inc. The management of the factory refuses to pay the workers a fair wage and requires long, ten hour days for its workers. Even whilst the factory workers are on strike, there are still scabs in the town who are willing to work these hours for the pay it provides.

But it’s not all bad everywhere. As it turns out, the week this event starts is also the week school is back in session. So all the kids and teens will be off to school! Not only that, but they’ll have their homecoming dance to prepare for.

So there’s your setting. Now, what do you do with all this? Well, your character will have lost all their memories of their old life and of Luceti! They’ll believe they grew up in this place all their life and with only the problems of this rather simple life. They won’t fight, they won’t have powers, and they’d much prefer to let the police handle that sort of thing for them anyway. Adult characters will have jobs as either displaced factory workers, farmers, or other jobs like doctors, merchants, teachers, and so on. The affluent aristocracy may not necessarily work, but if they do, they’re likely to hold jobs like bankers, business owners, and so on.

So where does your character belong? That’s your choice. They can be among the very poor or the very rich. What we’d like to see is no more than a fourth of the characters belong to the aristocracy, just so there’s a fairly realistic spread among the characters. We won’t necessarily go out of our way to enforce it one way or another, but do keep it in mind while you’re plotting. There will be NPC characters present for the event that will effectively act as ‘dressing’ to make the town seem more populated than it actually is. They’re just there to bustle about and buy and sell things. They’re not important.

(It should be noted that police officers will ONLY be NPCs. There’s a good reason for that which you’ll find out later.)

Then of course, there’s the matter of family. Last time around, the Malnosso ran this experiment and didn’t much care for how nonsensical things were, which made for one rather large family tree. This time, the mastermind behind this event has more an eye for detail. So try and structure your family units a little smaller. Think your basic ‘mom and dad with two kids’ kind of situation. While there’s certainly room for variety, the goal is that not everyone is related to each other. Because otherwise... eww?

Try to be smart about figuring out your families. The parents should look like they’re older than their own kids. While obviously it would be impossible to give every kid parents that are actually their age, the trick is that if a character is going to be your kid, you should be at least five years older than them. (And this is talking physical age, since this AU won’t have immortals or clones or stuff like that.)

If your character isn’t human, don’t worry! If you have any experience with the Muppets, you know that the human population are aware muppets are different, but it doesn’t seem to bother them or stand out. It’s the same situation here. However, you also have the option of just turning your non-human character into a human instead. It’s entirely up to you!

Finally, you don’t have to be evented at all! However, it should be noted that since this will be the minority, these standouts from civilization will be treated as insane. And not just in a “Oh you’re so crazy” kind of way. The police will actively pursue these kinds of people if they may a nuisance of themselves. Luceti Valley even has its own insane asylum, the Bilirubin Institute, where such people are ‘treated’. However, this is an era where these treatments aren’t always the most humane (think electric shock therapy) and are the kind of places people won’t want to end up, especially without their powers and weapons. So if you play unevented, your character can cause a ruckus and try to avoid being locked up or they can be quiet and observe and try to figure things out.

The town itself will be much larger. If you recall the Vaskoth draft, that’s the kind of layout you can expect. Characters will have 1950s-era automobiles to get around with (which sadly will be gone after the event) and there will even be paved roads to ride on. If you need any help imagining what it will look like, just find some clips of some old American fifties shows to get the right idea for it. All of Luceti’s current houses and shops will remain present, but will be complemented with several additional houses to live in. In that case, you don’t need to worry about figuring out where your family will live. The only things that won’t be in this new Luceti is the Battle Dome and the Community Buildings.

Finally, the event will take place August 2nd to the 11th. So that gives you nearly two weeks to plan! We’ll have more follow up posts after this where you’ll get to find out what’s really going on behind the event and what the second half will involve.

Please use this post for plotting and direct questions to use in the Mod Questions thread!

I would love to make them a real family. They'd both appreciate that, I think (Tsuzuki's always wanted a son, according to the manga so I'd love for him to know what it feels like. :P)

Consider it done!

Yesssss! Flora hasn't worked at the factory for probably a year now, but her boyfriend still does, so she's come back to do what she can to help the effort.

Awesome.

Also Tenebaum is now Pascal's sister in law. So Flora will have an aunt and Sophie, Eleanor and Rin as cousins.

I'd definitely be up for tossing Mulder at Saori! Or anything else that works, I'm all for figuring something out.

I'm still figuring things out, but I think I need to have both of mine thrown at yours! SOMEHOW.

Mulder ALWAYS needs younger sisters, because Issues.

On the wrong account, and I need to update what's going on, but! Elie is an adopted kid, Cloche is from some aristocratic family, and Maron is the only one that doesn't have anything fully lined up beyond "orphaned/abandoned by her parents street rat" unless something else comes up!

That sounds good to me! Vash will be happy to treat her like a lady and out on a nice dinner date during the event! He'll even walk her home, but he may just try to steal a kiss or two. >D
neverplaysfair: (That was a nice distraction.)

So I had an idea and I'd like to see what you thought of it.

Revy and Saten as sisters.

...I can't decide if they'd be the kind of sisters who would be alike enough to stick together, or who would be too alike to ever get along. XD

[personal profile] fashionably_strong 2013-07-27 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Uncle Vash, you either need a promotion or need to get a job at Capsule Corp so you won't have to ask for money. Dating isn't cheap, you know.

[Pause.]

Or at least I hope you're not dating some cheap girl.

i_speak_softly: (Don't start - you'll lose.)

Donatello finally

[personal profile] i_speak_softly 2013-07-27 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Don is the son of Nic and Revy. He is a faithful son, but that doesn't change the fact that his parents are just terrible parents, so as soon as he was old enough, he took his younger sister Norma and moved out.

Don is smart enough to be an astrophysicist, but because of his dad's disability and his mom's drinking problem, his family didn't have the money for him to get the education necessary for a Serious Science Career. Instead, he works as a mechanic, saving as much money as he can, so Norma might be able to benefit from educational opportunities Don didn't have.

If your character owns one of the garages in town and would be willing to hire a brilliant but under-educated young man, come plot with me!

Since it has the side effect of stopping Toad spells cold, he kinda had to learn that one quickly.

Hey, if it works for Yang and Ursula...
