lend me your hearts, luceti!

Hello, folks!

It’s just about that time of year again. Surely, those of you who are newer in our ranks have heard the ominous (and often gleeful) whispered plans and speculations. Yes, Luceti, it’s time for your February event! The event starts on the 11th at 12:00am and ends at 11:59pm on the 17th.

The Malnosso -- in their best/worst impression of Cupid -- have a habit of turning Luceti’s romantic atmosphere on its head. People will be falling in love with the wrong people. People will be falling in love with the right people. People will be falling in love with people they didn’t even know existed in the village until now. Unlike the last few rounds of this event, this is once again a spontaneous love. Characters will not believe that they have always loved each other; these pairings will be new, fresh-faced, and bursting with novelty for all characters involved. Even still, it wouldn’t be a decent Valentine’s event if we didn’t throw you a twist or two.

Bil has long maintained that Valentine’s is a particularly potent time for the Malnosso. All those lovey-dovey feelings floating through the air make for some prime Shifting. Up until now, the fabled Valentine’s Shifts have generally dealt in twosomes and threesomes -- pairing up and pairing off Luceti’s inhabitants like characters at the end of a Shakespearean comedy. However, this year things are a little more...ambitious.

On the 11th, characters will encounter a winter day much like most of the winter days they’ve endured. A picturesque sunrise; a crisp chilly air; a heap of snow to clear from their walkways. But something is sweet and saccharine in the state of Luceti, for some vital flip has been switched in the remote corners of their consciousnesses. Some primal urge to love and be loved has been nudged into action. Each and every affected character will suddenly find themselves inexplicably and inevitably attracted to certain traits. Let’s call them love-triggers. Perhaps these are traits they’ve always been attracted to, now made imperative by the Shift. Or perhaps these love-triggers represent everything a character usually despises. Either way, their fate is inescapable; Cupid has loosed his arrow and it’s time for romance to run amok in Luceti.

The practical upshot is simple. Players will choose traits (physical, habitual, emotional, mental, whatever) that will act as catalysts for their characters’ affections. Every time a character encounters someone with that trait, Cupid’s semi-automatic trigger has been pulled and they’re now doomed to fall in love with that someone. For example, Buffy Summers might find herself suddenly and quite desperately attracted to men who know their way around a boomerang -- and so her afternoon visit with Sokka at the smithy takes an awkward turn. Or Katniss can now only imagine being attracted to guys who are prettier than she is. Characters might find themselves with eyes only for villagers with certain hair colours, combat skills, food preferences, or fashion styles. They might fall desperately in love only with characters who can tap-dance. Or perhaps only with characters who can’t cook.

A few things to consider:
  • You can chose more than one love-trigger trait per character! Some of them can even alter throughout the week. However, we expect this’ll work best if people stick to only about three per character at any given time.
  • It’s up to you whether your characters have to LEARN about a trait before the Shift takes hold. Some traits are obvious, visible ones. But what about those you only learn about by getting to know someone? Well, if your character is love-triggered by stellar strength, you can choose for them to remain indifferent until they’re told Vegeta has an incredibly high power level or whether they fall in love while still blissfully ignorant of that fact.
  • Take your time selecting your love-trigger traits! We know this is a bit of a departure from the usual format, but if you already have a pairing planned it’s as simple as coordinating with another player for traits that will ensure the same two characters will still fall exclusively for each other.
  • We encourage you to throw in a few ‘hateable traits’ as well. For example, although your character is now attracted to coffee-drinkers, they can’t stand anyone who takes their coffee black. Or maybe they’ll fall in love with anyone who can play darts, but will hate anyone who can beat them at the same game. Play around with the combinations.
  • Naturally, this is all optional. You don’t need to have your character affected at all.

Ideally, this will spread some Valentine’s fun across a number of threads and leave plenty of options both for those players who are excited for their first February in Luceti, as well as offering up lots of fresh ideas for those of us who’ve been around this block a few times.

The 17th will see a celebration similar to those of past years. Characters will find an embossed invitation tucked inside the front cover of their journals, asking them to gather up by the hot springs for a marvelous party at the Featherly Haven Resort & Spa. Upon arriving, they’ll find that the area has been temporarily transformed into a luxurious vacation retreat. Although the weather is just as chilly as it should be in mid-February, the hot springs are compellingly warm. The usual hot springs buildings are somewhat incredibly replaced with what looks like a swanky resort where characters can take refuge from the winter chill. There is a sizeable lobby, complete with plump couches and a droid-staffed bar. Each and every one of the hotel’s rooms is a honeymoon suite, stocked with champagne and fondue and yet more platters of fresh fruit. Courteous (albeit stoic) droids tend massage chairs and manicure stations on the resort's first floor, shaded by billowing, cream-coloured curtains. Others will be passing around festively coloured drinks, platters of fresh fruit, and -- of course -- huge complimentary towels to wrap up in once your soaking is complete: the whitest and fluffiest and most spa-like towels you ever did see.

Available both in the rooms, outside by the hotsprings, and in heaps inside the lobby, are little foil-wrapped and bite-sized chocolates. As with other items in previous years, each of these chocolates comes with a dizzying side-effect upon consumption:

  • White Chocolate will overwhelm its consumer with the desire to talk and -- more specifically -- the desire to share. Upon eating this treat, characters will want to chat the ear off of anyone near them, perhaps spilling some personal details in the process. But being chatty is a two way street, and so they will also press upon their conversation partners for details of their own lives. It’s a lethal combination: a nosy over-sharer.

  • Milk Chocolate will flush its consumer with the desire to be warm and affectionate with those around them. Hugs and kisses on the cheek will abound. Upon eating this treat, characters will want to throw their arm around those near them -- clasping close friends and associates alike. Personal space is no longer an issue.

  • Dark Chocolate will inspire quite another flavour of affection in its consumer. Upon eating this treat, a character’s libido takes over the driving seat. Many people around them become terribly terribly attractive and, as lust courses through the character’s system, they’ll hope to convince someone back to their suite for a little hanky panky.

  • Chocolate Coated Marzipan -- smooth and silky on the tongue -- evokes a spontaneous sense of...marital bliss. Those who chow down on this treat will find themselves tracking down someone they know they simply don’t want to live without. Whether this is someone they were previously attracted to in the week or a total stranger, your character will find themselves proposing marriage. And, (in)conveniently for them, all marriages may take place in the resort’s own Vegas-style wedding chapel! All ceremonies will be performed by a droid-officiant who looks disturbingly like Elvis Presley. Witnesses are optional but encouraged.

When the clock ticks over from the 17th to the 18th, most of the lovey-dovey feelings will fade. Characters who have spent the night at the hotel will wake to a small army of housekeeping droids cleaning up after the bacchanalian festivities of the prior day. They’ll be shooed out of their rooms and towards the transporters for one last atom-scattering of shame as the villagers find their way back to their homes. Everyone still there will be prompted to leave: first politely, and then a little less so. Anyone who argues will eventually be dragged bodily back to the village.

Ah, but there’s one last twist! You’ve all heard the rumours. Kin’corans once suffered a body-swap Shift where people simply didn’t...revert back come the end. Well, it’s Luceti’s time to face that fate. Although most characters will go back to normal by the 18th, they may be surprised to find that not everyone around them has reverted. Some people are still in love -- those who are unable to shake off the Shift will find themselves stuck in utter adoration of the last person they fell for. Unlike Kin’cora, this will persist only until the end of the month, when there will be an NPC post to address the phenomenon.

Have fun, be good to your fellow players, and have an early Happy Valentine’s Day from us here at Mod Central. Ask questions or sign your characters up for the Shift glitch down below.
