How's My Driving?

This is a crit post for both the community and game and for your characters. If you have something you'd like to see us improve upon with the game, PLEASE TELL US HERE! Anon commenting is on, but if anything gets really nasty there will be warnings and thread-freezing. This isn't required but everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the advice of your fellow players!

Just some pointers: no taking cheap shots, no dragging personal issues into things and for the love of all that is wise and great, please double check your replies and comments before posting them. Sometimes a change in phrasing can make all the difference between a helpful tone and a condescending one.

ALSO ALSO: We'd like to clarify that HMD means HMD- which means it's okay to have both good and bad crit. Some people have expressed concerns about posting good/bad crit when a character already has bad/good crit posted. We'd like to encourage you guys to do it anyway! You can drive well or badly, and even good drivers make mistakes. So give it a try \o

Since there always seems to be a mix up in LJRP about Constructive Criticism (commonly known as a Critique) and actual Criticism, here's a handy little guide from a book known as "Writing Alone, Writing Together; A Guide for Writers and Writing Groups by Judy Reeves"



Criticism finds fault
Critique looks at structure

Criticism looks for what's lacking
Critique finds what's working

Criticism condemns what it doesn't understand
Critique asks for clarification

Criticism is spoken with a cruel wit and sarcastic tongue
Critique's voice is kind, honest, and objective

Criticism is negative
Critique is positive (even about what isn't working)

Criticism is vague and general
Critique is concrete and specific

Criticism has no sense of humor
Critique insists on laughter, too

Criticism looks for flaws in the writer as well as the writing
Critique addresses only what is on the page (or in this case, the post)

A pro-tip to remember is that regardless of everything, a critique is still a personal opinion, unless it is backed up by canon fact or based on grammar and sentence structure.

I like how Shuri is pretty much everywhere and how you've managed to develop him from an asshole to a slightly more caring asshole! Though I'm somewhat disappointed you haven't followed canon and made him gay for Teito like everyone else is!!

Hey, dude. So, I think I critted you on this sometime in the past (it may have been the LJ-wide HMD? I can't recall) but the fact of the matter is I'm still seeing some of the same issues I pointed out before.

Your characters are all beautifully IC, I've nothing but praise in that regard, but sometimes it reads like you aren't paying much attention to what the other person is typing. Like, your characters neglect to notice things they should be noticing. Sometimes the smaller details are the most important, and it can be really awkward threading with someone who isn't paying attention to the cues from the narrative.

And to clarify: I don't mean "She looks like she has something on her mind" so much as I mean "She's holding a bunch of bananas over her head", since I know that first example can be a little more subjective based on the character.

I know it's easy to just gloss over the tl;dr stuff and hit reply, but make sure you aren't missing the important things!

I think that by this point I praise you as a person and for you icons and for your characters on like a daily basis, so this time I'm going to focus on one very specific point I've been admiring from you in the last month or two. Particularly when I contrast it to how you are personally.

Winry's value system about families. Her desire to want to be a wife and a mother and to feel like at her current age she's old for it is, by modern standards, and incredibly backwards idea. But you've taken that idea and made it feel sincere. You haven't been playing it up as something which is backwards or wrong, but rather as a legitimate desire, a sincere worry, and generally something which is not "wrong" for her to want. It comes off very organic, and while I can't say I expected any less than that from you, when I compare it to our own talks on similar subjects what really impresses me is that it's clear you are doing this from the lens of Winry. Which means you are internalizing her mindset and extrapolating it out onto her goals and dreams and values. Which shows how into the character you are, despite your worries about her aging and development over her time here.

I love that you are playing her as a character and for her character, not relying on Ed or automail or whatever as a crutch.

So I've been stalking the hell out of Yuan and Dhaos' conversations. Dude, you are doing an amazing job with what has gotta be one hell of a difficult situation--how much information does he tell Dhaos? How should it be conveyed? These aren't easy things for a millenia-old seraph to decide, let alone an ordinary mun, so major kudos.

As for the rest, well, you know I always love watching you play Yuan. That definitely hasn't changed. ♥

Ya know what, I actually don't really have much concrit for the guy. I wish I did, and I also wish I could be a lot more descriptive about this, but I have to leave in like the next half an hour or so. BUT ANYWAYS! I love your Shanks and I think you portray the character very well! To be honest I never thought I would ever get a Shanks so you apping him was a very pleasant surprise to be honest. XD

Their threads together are a lot of fun too! And I love how despite both of them being men now, their relationship hasn't changed that much at all. Luffy still does and say stupid things and Shanks teases him about it non-stop. Which actually almost leads me to believe this is going to be similar to how they act in canon when they finally meet. Though maybe not because when they meet, it'll likely be in a more serious setting...

BUT YES. Before the rambling commences I just wanna say I think you're doing a great job and I want you to keep up the good work!! o/

You want concrit for Norma? TOO BAD. She's epic. She's another one of those characters whose voice I hear in every tag, and I've never seen an OOC moment from her yet. You're reminding me why I fell in love with her in Legendia years ago, and I want all the tags with you. ALL THE TAGS.

As for Dist, I think I've said it before, but I really admire how you're putting the nuance into his character that was implied in Abyss. There was no time to really explore it in the game, since we didn't get to see any of his non-antagonistic relations--we only heard about them from Anise--but it's there in your RP. If I had more time, I'd be reading every single one of his threads with everyone, because I just love watching him go.
