I like the idea of even more alternatives for being deliciously terrible to our characters. Some people maybe don't want kidnapping and a sickness-and-cure setup like you describe would work great for that.
I also like the kidnappings and I want them to stay. Can't we just have all the nice things? Kidnapping has been a part of the premise from the beginning, and yes, the characters learn to live with the fear over time, but the effects of that are interesting too. ...Frankly, it's one of the main reasons I joined this game in the first place - the premise seemed workable and flexible.
More flexible OOC-wise, with more options for why characters are gone or different effects/plots to have, that would be awesome. Completely changing the way an integral part* of the game works? Feels less awesome.
* The argument "well the plot has led it to become obsolete" won't hold much water with me. They're still in charge here - they can do what they want. We're their war machines, and war machines get tested.
