Activity Check Results / HMD

The results for the Activity Check are in. Please note that the following characters were either inactive, didn't post to the activity check, or failed to speak to a moderator about their activity. Also added were characters who have dropped, for your convenience. Also for some reason a few usernames were not on the Friend Add/Remove, and I have no idea why, but they're added to this copy-pasta :|; Sorry about that guys.

Copy-paste the following here:

A number of you passed the activity check, but barely. (You know who you are.) Try to pick things up, as it's no fun to character-squat.

If there are any mistakes here, please let us know! Additionally, if your character was removed and you're still active, feel free to appeal to one of us about keeping your character. However, please remember next time to stay active and post to the Activity Check. Thank you!

And as always:

HMD

How's My Driving?

This is a crit post for both the community and game and for your characters. If you have something you'd like to see us improve upon with the game, PLEASE TELL US HERE! Anon commenting is on, but if anything gets really nasty there will be warnings and thread-freezing. This isn't required but everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the advice of your fellow players!

Just some pointers: no taking cheap shots, no dragging personal issues into things and for the love of all that is wise and great, please double check your replies and comments before posting them. Sometimes a change in phrasing can make all the difference between a helpful tone and a condescending one.

ALSO ALSO: We'd like to clarify that HMD means HMD- which means it's okay to have both good and bad crit. Some people have expressed concerns about posting good/bad crit when a character already has bad/good crit posted. We'd like to encourage you guys to do it anyway! You can drive well or badly, and even good drivers make mistakes. So give it a try \o

So, at this point I could really use some characterization feedback. More than once, in canon, Ginko remarks "I don't know that I would have done differently. I've never lived in a village before" or "If I stay her any longer, I'd get too involved."

But now he has stayed in a village, for nearly a year and a half. According to canon's own dictates, that has necessarily changed the way Ginko interacts with people and the way he makes decisions. If anyone could give me crit on those aspects, specifically, I'd REALLY appreciate it.

Also [Bad username or site: rathersolitary title= @ livejournal.com] crit is welcome, too.

Hm, Vash and Ginko haven't in general threaded too much together. So he still has that aloof quality I felt he had in the manga/anime. Ginko cared, but he could be there one day and then vanish for a few years the next, but able to pick up where they left off from there when he did make his way back.

As for his closer relationships in Luceti. I can see him struggling with it now and then, which seems right. At the same time, slowly trying to settle into a more non-nomadic lifestyle. He's growing more comfortable around people, not that he's been anti-social, but I guess I should say more welcoming to people getting to know him. Making real friends instead of aquatints.

Yeah, so, I guess I couldn't have any good advice except to say I do believe you're "doing it right" as they say.

I know you've had moments where you're not sure if Ginko is 100 percent spot on, but trust me when I say that he isn't just Mushishi Ginko; he's very much Luceti Ginko. I've had a lot of moments where I've roleplayed a character who's been in game for a while and then after a year went back and rewatched their canon.

And then screamed in horror at some parts and go IS AM DOING THEM RIGHT STILL?!

But then I realize, yeah, I'm playing the character fine. It's just that there's always changes going on in a storyline—and a lot of personality quirks remain, while a lot are inevitably pulled at by the character's trials and memories in their new home. Blah blah blah, I'm super fascinated seeing how my characters and other people's characters change over time. And I think you've done it veeery smoothly, through this time. For someone like Ginko, even just a few months stationary is an insane new avenue for him to change, whether it's faintly or with more obviousness.

A good example—he's more open, and I've noticed through Sayo's CR with him, slowly edging toward a family mindset. Before he distanced himself, but without losing his humanity or sympathy. And now he has both of those, as well as a closer bond to people. And I've noticed that the months Sayo's been here, he's been slowly turning her from 'just a patient' to a more brother-sister undertone. I love that, man.

So basically. Uh. All that, there. And stuff. He's made a lot of progress from the canon material, and that's NEVER a bad thing. Seeing him develop, having the things he wasn't really able to have, and how it's impacted his thoughts and CR? It's a lot of fun.

It's been a little while since I've seen Mushishi so I can't comment too much on that note. As Ashlee has pointed out though, its that characters while in Luceti have to grow and adapt to the changes, especially when faced with the idea of permanence--and for someone as impermanent as Ginko, I think you're portraying that well, with his fears and whatnot and then going off to the wildness to reconnect with "himself" and just his struggle, I find it very fascinating.

Crit-wise, though I guess it's more of my insecurity--I notice that sometimes we really don't get the chance to end threads well, or it feels as if they leave off on an awkward note when you get busy for a while and drop certain threads, then we say "oh we should talk about how that went!" and then we don't. And then I feel uncomfortable the time a new thread rolls around. So I guess it's more of a reverse crit/question in; is there anything I can do to make threading easier for us?

Well, I'm glad if the struggle is realistic, so far.

But on the second note-- it should tell you something that I read this before being completely awake and thought it was from another mun. And what it should tell you is that it is not you, this is just an issue I REALLY need to work on. Especially as of late. It's been a real struggle for me to even break 200 comments, when I used to push myself to 300-400 before dropping any threads. I am definitely guilty of tagging easy threads over challenging ones, in recent months especially. Raine has actually gotten more of my specific attention, sad as that probably sounds, because I know you brought this up once before. I'm very literally ADHD, and these kinds of things (school and pleasure alike) can build up and intimidate me, sometimes, or just get forgotten in the pile of need-to-do so as annoying as it is, the best thing you can do is remind me. I try not to drop a thread unless it's at a handwaveable point, but that also means different things to different people.

I know you're eager for feedback or crit but the thing is there's not much to give you because as far as we're concerned, you're doing well.

I talk to you on a near-daily basis and Ginko's characterization comes up frequently - you tell me your ideas and theories, some serious and some cracky - and I question you all the time. I ask you to expand on why he'd do this, or what he's thinking, and you always manage to explain in a way that stays true to his canon roots and his new home; to his friends and acquaintances. Like Ashlee mentioned: Ginko is Luceti Ginko now, and having him move towards familial ties because he can't leave is natural.

I can't offer much in terms of characterization feedback, but it was very interesting having Ginko and Albert interact after ... who knows how long? Their thread during the draft was especially neat because I got the sense that Ginko was trying to figure Albert out, and that's such a rare thing that I thought I'd mention how much I enjoyed the opportunity.

[identity profile] one-green-eye.livejournal.com 2011-06-19 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I still have that open in a tab, man ;A; I just got stuck. I really enjoyed that as well, and I'm glad it was a good thing-- he sort of took off in a direction I had not anticipated. Frankly, that's probably why I won't send him on a draft again. In canon he will literally LEAVE a village when he realizes he's tempted to start shaking up their internal politics, and sometimes I'm worried he'll meddle more than I can handle. But I do look forward to finishing that with Albert, because it's something I thought was a while coming. He's interested in figuring out how the guy thinks, and using him as a resource for analyzing the situation.
