How's My Driving?

This is a crit post for both the community and game and for your characters. If you have something you'd like to see us improve upon with the game, PLEASE TELL US HERE! Anon commenting is on, but if anything gets really nasty there will be warnings and thread-freezing. This isn't required but everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the advice of your fellow players!

Just some pointers: no taking cheap shots, no dragging personal issues into things and for the love of all that is wise and great, please double check your replies and comments before posting them. Sometimes a change in phrasing can make all the difference between a helpful tone and a condescending one.

ALSO ALSO: We'd like to clarify that HMD means HMD- which means it's okay to have both good and bad crit. Some people have expressed concerns about posting good/bad crit when a character already has bad/good crit posted. We'd like to encourage you guys to do it anyway! You can drive well or badly, and even good drivers make mistakes. So give it a try \o

I do have a bit of a problem with your portrayal as Rin. He just seems to completely lack the "energy" and motivation that he has in the canon, which in turn is making him come across as being a very flat and un-interesting character to thread with and read. It seems as though he sits on the back bench in comparison to your other characters and doesn't shine out like they do. I'm not sure if that's just because of the route you've chosen to take him, but he strikes me as being very OOC at times and I have a hard time reading your tags in his voice. Rin as a character is someone who has plenty of energy, and no matter how many times he gets knocked down he never gives up and continues. Your portrayal honestly doesn't reflect that, and it's unfortunate to see as I love the canon myself.

There are three important qualifiers for this, and while I do agree with you about this (I've frankly been frustrated myself at how little I've been able to do because of them and I do agree he's not nearly as vibrant as my other three in spite of my efforts) I think I'll just outline them to see what you think and we can go into suggestions from there if you have any beyond what I've been doing/plan to do-

1) I took him from the end of chapter 26. This means two important things: the first is that this was right after the one time he was knocked down and did give up, even if it was only for a moment (in the prison Mephisto made and Shiemi had to psyche him back up. The second... well. Actually I'll address the second as a second point entirely.

What this first point means is that he's from a complicated spot where he (as shown in the chapters after 26 where he's still not 100%) is wondering a lot about his self-worth and if it was right/okay for him to be alive. And he hasn't had any need to address it in Luceti so he just... hasn't. He's been doing other things (training off-screen, getting a "respectable job" here, being frustrated by Yukio not being here on their mutual birthday, etc) but he has no confronted that question of self-worth and has dodged every time people have asked about his tail or his flames because frankly, not everyone immediately connects them to demons let alone Satan in Luceti, unlike in canon.

2) This is more practical than an IC vs OOC point so I confess this is all on me. When I apped Rin, we were only on like chapter 28 or 29. I had assumed/hoped we would get him drawing his sword in the next few chapters. Well, chapter 30 came and he hasn't drawn it, and there was a hiatus, and only in the most recent chapter have a known for sure that Shura's statement (it was a mental block) was correct. When he couldn't draw it still in 27/28 I was wary that there might have been more involved, and as such his power's been way more limited here than it is in canon.

3) A Luceti Problem. There's no obvious enemies for him to fight and he was told in the first few days that he'd just go home to the exact same time, breeding apathy. If I had him able to draw the sword, I'd've had him go to the barrier and attack it full force. If he had a reason to think the TP war was his war he'd get more invested in the draft/missions (which wouldn't take much, just a friend getting mixed up in it) but instead I've just not found a whole lot for him to cling to in terms of his motivation to determinate thought things.

That said, because I am aware it is an issue (and tbh these are mostly circumstantial excuses) I would absolutely love whatever suggestions or insight you can give me, because wanting to propel Rin back into being more on par with canon is something I've been wanting to do for a while now. the lack of conflict has been killing me (which is why I've done things like try to get him in fights due to his temper, etc).

I've definitely noticed your increasing comfort with your threads, and I think your range has expanded accordingly. That's a hell of a lot of growth in a short period of time, particularly for someone who's relatively new to this whole business, so good on you again! ♥

Nuke! I lucked out so hard when you decided to pick up Gambit. I feel like we're in a really good flow with him and Rogue and I love being able to talk with you OOCly about it. But especially since he's so important to her character, the fact that you are so marvelously IC and willing to talk with me about things is just - really important to me, since I love playing Rogue. And the fact of the matter is, it's gotten more fun playing her since he's joined - and that can only mean that you are Doing It Right.

Also, Noa is adorable. Seriously, I think I die a little of cute each time we thread with her, and even just stalking her around. I can see how she'd take up a lot of energy, but the fact that you're able to handle - so gracefully - such different voices speaks volumes about your talent and skill.

Also, somehow, we don't have that much CR, I realize, as I stare at this. And I'd love to fix that. But you know what? That doesn't even PERTAIN to the fact that you keep ALL THESE VOICES going and make them all INTERESTING and AWESOME and a DELIGHT to stalk. Thank you, Ashlee, for helping make the game fun.

Ever since the plot with bringing in Zelda I think Sheik has strayed way way too far into the realm of unrecognizable as Sheik. When I read your threads I feel like you're playing an OC with Sheik as the PB. I think you play him way too nice and willing to be friendly when he's not supposed to act that way at all. He's supposed to be helpful, yes, but he keeps his distance from people and doesn't get close. He's cryptic and mysterious and I don't get that vibe from your sheik at all, and that's wrong. He doesn't play his harp enough and I don't understand why he makes pizza at all. Where did that even come from?

And another thing, he's a lot stronger of a character than you make him out to be. He's not going to break down over little things like people leaving, even Zelda. I don't get why you have him fighting Link all the time either. He's supposed to like Link. He's supposed to be friends with Link. I don't see that at all here. I just see Sheik being malicious for no reason at all.

Also, separating him from Zelda doesn't seem like something that should have happened, and no offense to either you or Zelda-mun, but the mods shouldn't have allowed it. It's bad enough Sheik is being played as a separate person, which I was okay with since I know there are different interpretations of canon and what you had was a viable interpretation. But separating Sheik and letting him be his own person with his own separate body is impossible in canon and it should have been impossible in Luceti too.

Last of all, ooc, you are completely unreachable and impossible to talk to and if I may be blunt, kind of idiotic. You need to stop acting like everyone in the game is out to get you. Everyone and their moms knows about grudgeanon and none of us are it, so get over it and actually play instead of dropping all your threads with everyone but the Zelda cast and the Yami no Matsuei cast. I know people actually like you, so stop acting stupid and come join us. I bet your characterisation will improve a lot if you do, even.
