Mod Applications

Announcement time! First of all, here's the latest add-remove copy-pasta, to be pasta'd here:

With that out of the way: eyes forward, Lucetians, serious business ahead.

With the previous (and unfortunate) departure of a good chunk of the mod team, it's obvious that Luceti is in need of some new direction. We've had a few months to run it solo and figure some stuff out, and it's basically come down to this: we need to recruit. We've considered a lot of your suggestions discussed over here, and they will be sorted through one by one. First, though, we need a proper mod team.

Before I go any further, I need to be up front and honest with you all. I've been running Luceti for a long time, and for a while now, I haven't been doing much in the way of plot. Why? Simply because it's been so long. I got burnt out, and when we hired on new mods who were full of ideas and enthusiasm, I let them take the reins. Masa (and Emily and then Aly and even Bayley for a bit) did such a great job leading the plot that I didn't recognize an issue before it became one- the workload was too one-sided, we weren't working together anymore, and certain members of the team were getting just as burnt out without the additional support they needed. Moving forward, this has to change.

I really want Luceti to continue. I know we have an awesome community here and a lot of very talented people. But I can't do it alone, and neither can anyone else. That's the point of a team.

With that out of the way, on to the important stuff. After some thorough pondering, we've decided to hire on at least three people if possible: two or three mods for plot, and one for applications and maintenance. You can apply for one or both positions. Why so many? Mostly to divvy up the workload and get more creative juices flowing. (This is assuming we even get that many apps, which is obviously not guaranteed.)

First and foremost, here are some ground rules/qualifications for becoming a mod (this goes for both positions):

1) You have to know and follow all of the usual Luceti rules. Duh.

2) Be trustworthy and even-tempered enough to deal with players of all sorts. People might come to you with issues related to player-to-player conflict, activity checks, application questions, etc. and you need to be available to them and polite with your responses. Obviously any question you can't answer can be passed on to other mods, which brings us to the next on the list-

3) Communication is key. We use Plurk extensively for mod stuff, so you need that. AIM is also useful. You need to be able to talk to the other mods on the team and get along well enough to plot as a group. Additionally, as mentioned above, I don't want the mod team to crash and burn due to an unbalanced workload the way it has before. Luceti needs a strong team so it doesn't fall apart.

4) Commitment is important. We've had kind of an accidental revolving door modship syndrome lately, and it's nobody's fault! But modding involves NPCs and long-term plotting just as much as short-term events, so it's beneficial to have people who are committed and able to stick around for a while.

5) Activity cannot be an issue. Not just because as a mod, you need to be setting an example, but because some time is required at least a few days a week to handle modding duties, even for just half an hour here and there. If you barely have time for tags, you won't have any time for modding, either. Activity doesn't have to be perfect, but it's something to keep in mind.

6) Personality. Part of being a mod is being confident and having some good common sense. If you're getting bashed on the anon comms or having secrets written about you? We're looking for someone who will take it in stride. Troll bait? We want someone who knows just to ignore it. This doesn't mean we're looking for someone arrogant and boastful, just someone who is willing to talk to us about stuff and not be too shy to actually get things done. When we’re plotting, it’s good to have different perspectives on how things are shaping up. The more discussed an event is, the better it will be in the end.

7) Abilities brought to the table. When it comes right down to it, being able to do basic HTML work with links and tables and images is just the name of the game. If you want to do this, we want you to already know how to work with all this stuff. Beyond just knowing HTML, being a bit intuitive on how to speed up your work can be very useful in making your job that much easier.

8) Knowledge. You should have an understanding of what the plot in the game is so far. While we don’t expect you to remember everything or have been present for everything, you should be able to pick up on the general ongoing storyline so far. If you find that you had no idea that there the kidnappings are done by Rogue Malnosso, then you probably haven’t been paying too much attention to the plot. But if you’re chosen, you’ll be filled in on the story so far and details not yet revealed. Keep this in mind if you do apply, since you have to be careful about not metagaming with your regular characters. ADDITIONALLY, you'll get to take part in the absolute gutting of unnecessary complexity we're probably going to do in order to make the game more accessible to people. So if that sounds fun, well. :B

9) Creativity and enthusiasm. Don't try to join our team because you feel that it's necessary. If modding is going to feel like a job, if you don't really want it now, you probably won't want it later, either. Get excited! Get adventurous! You have the opportunity to reshape the world you're playing in! If you'd rather not bother or you just want to stay lost in the mystery, this job isn't for you.

10) Discretion. You need to be able to to keep secrets. No hopping over to RPAnons or Wankgate or anon-Plurk with future plot details, or sharing information about a player who might be having personal issues, or even that the mod team is having difficulty with this or that. This goes hand in hand with the trustworthiness. If you're joining the team, please be a team player.

Additional things worth noting:
  • If you've applied for a mod position previously and not been selected and want to try again, you can reuse parts of your app if you wish. There are some additional questions this time around, but hopefully nothing too gruelling.
  • If you're picked for one of the positions, you will still have an opportunity to participate in mod discussions regarding the other position, as well as some of the responsibilities as well. That means that all mods share certain duties (such as list-organizing and application processes), and all mods get to be involved in event development; it's just that the positions are leaning more to one side or the other.
  • If you want to apply for both positions as an "I can do this or this" app, you can post them together or separately. Just have some space between the apps so we know what's what. You can also copy-paste repeat questions.
  • You don't have to write essay answers for all the questions; sometimes brief and concise responses are sufficient. The importance of the question, however, should get an appropriately thoughtful answer, so consider carefully what you're being asked before you submit your app.

If you’re still interested, then great! Feel free to apply and join us. Please fill out the form(s) below and reply to this post. All comments are screened and we'll be contacting the selected candidate directly, so this post is purely for submissions and will remain screened. The deadline for submission is FEBRUARY 9TH, 11:59 PM EST. Basically we want all our options on the table by the 10th.

As an additional note: if the date above is too soon (due to busy schedules, short notice, and whatnot) but you're interested in applying, please come forward and speak to me. We don't want anyone to rush into this and regret it later, because then we'll have to do this all over again, and that doesn't look good for a game. If the applications we've gotten before the deadline hits aren't sufficient, we'll consider extending it.

There will be a thread below to handle questions people might have; that thread will have comments unscreened as they get answered, so keep that in mind. If you'd prefer a question answered privately, please contact me via Plurk, AIM, or my personal journal. You can use the mod account too, but responses won't be as speedy.

That is all! To those who respond and/or apply, thank you, thank you, thank you. Whether you're chosen or not, the effort you put into this will not be unnoticed. We look forward to the opportunity to work with more of you guys <3
