weather? draft? halloween? a vertible october cornucopia of stuff!

It ain’t just our 5-year anniversary, it’s also...October! Happy October, folks! We have wonderful October gifts for you! Kinda. Not really. Not unless you really like the gift of zombies. And then there might just be something wrong with you. But wait. Hey, look at that weather page. Does it say TORNADO tomorrow? In MY Luceti?

Here’s the deal. The tornado is going to hit part of the village. It’s not an especially strong tornado. And we mods have ABSOLUTELY no preference for how it’s handled. This is something we’re going to let you guys play with. Will the tornado be stopped by our weather wizards? Is this tornado maybe gonna have a Shift that just makes it more powerful as people mess with it? Will it even hit anything of importance? Here is an idea of its path of destruction:

It will blow in from the west and into the east before being broke up by the mountains. This is a relatively weak tornado that undeterred, will mostly just cause roofs to rattle, knock things over, break windows, pull up water, and basically just cause surface destruction on places that will auto-repair anyway. F1s tend to see winds that range from 73 to 112 MPH. As long as people stay inside, it won’t cause serious harm to them.

The tornado can be stopped, but only temporarily. Think of it as stepping on a hose. You stop the water for awhile, but then it comes out in a powerful burst. If people want to play with that aspect, it could potentially be used to cause the tornado to split off and cause serious damage and harm in places off its designated path. There will be a comment below where you can discuss all tornado-related plans.

Now that Masa’s done playing weatherman, let’s talk about zombies. Halloween is coming up and part of how we’d like to celebrate this spoooooky holiday is with a zombie-themed draft. This means that the horror, mayhem, and gritty violence is something you can opt into by signing your characters up below! Until we release our more detailed timline, here are the more pertinent facts to help you decide who you wanna enlist on this Draft of the Living Dead*:
  • This draft is (potentially) a long one. It’ll run in full from October 25th to October 31st. However, there will be an opt-into battlefield-evacuation subplot on the 28th. This means that your characters will have the ability to return to Luceti early. The circumstances for the evacuation will be expanded upon in a follow-up post.
  • The short-form gist is this: Luceti draftees will receive their marching orders on the 25th with only an hour of warning. The draft will be taking place in another enclosure, named Vaskoth. At first, it seems just like any other draft...until people start falling ill. A virus quickly spreads through the battlefield, affecting MSF, draftees, and cultists alike. Infected individuals will show zombie-like symptoms, starting out as fast-paced 28 Days Later-like berserkers until they become more traditional shamblers as the virus runs its course.
  • Expect things to be flexible! Your character can survive the draft entirely or contract the infection and have to be put down by someone they know and trust. Or they can infect others. Or they can contract the infection only to miraculously benefit from a potentially developed cure come the end of the draft. Hell, your character can help develop the cure! Although this is a zombie draft, when it comes to spoooookiness we want you guys to make your characters’ individual experiences to be as varied as you like.
  • As with previous drafts, you can sign up on this post. There’s no limit on how many you can send or if you indeed have to send anyone at all. Consider this the ‘opt in’ portion of the draft/event.
  • A more detailed timeline will go up this weekend once we get a rough idea of the numbers involved.
  • * Okay okay so it’s a virus. The zombies aren’t really dead until they’re decapitated or dewinged but I wanted a cute name for it.

    --

If this isn’t your cup of tea, we will be having more typical Halloween shenanigans happening in the village around the same time as the draft. Already, you’ll see on the weather page that there’s appropriately spooky mist. But what else is there? Well, we’d like your input. Toss out some ideas for various things you’d like to go down this time around and we’ll pick the good ones and come up with a...melange-a-halloween, if you will. Just bear in mind that the village stuff is intended to be less intense than the draft’s horror. So think fun spooky stuff! You’ll find a suggestion thread below where you can share your ideas.

And that’s it, everyone! If you want to plot for random stuff, use the rest of the post for that. Otherwise we’ll have four leading threads for MOD QUESTIONS, DRAFT SIGNUP, TORNADO PLOTTING, HALLOWEEN SUGGESTIONS.

For Ben Grimm walking around in a tornado isn't as much of a problem as it might be fore most, so long as he doesn't get hurled around. Not because it'll hurt him, but because he'll probably fly through a few walls. But before, during, and after the storm he'll be willing and ready to help clear a path for people to get somewhere safe.

Afterward he'll be all over cleaning the village up. Someone has to do the heavy lifting.

    [personal profile] windandrain 2012-10-17 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, these are my thoughts here. I know we've got a lot of Weather and Wind type characters who'd like to do something to help mitigate the damage caused by the tornado. Storm, Rainbow Dash, Aang, Nami, Valvalis, Eleytheria, and Saori here are the ones that I'm most aware of, but there are probably others (Sorry if I've left your name out, I'm just naming ones that I know for sure).

A thought that Katsu and I had, pertaining to Saori specifically, is that she could try and siphon away energy from the tornado, trying to make it smaller instead of outright stopping it. Being a storm god, its something she'd do regardless of consequences. But there's a problem, because that storm's energy has to go somewhere. Too MUCH energy drives her to lose control. Katsu had suggested having Loki siphon away some of her own energy, and maybe other people getting in on that as well?

It shouldn't stop the tornado, just keep the winds a little on the slower side. Of course, if nobody wants that and everyone wants it to make the tornado bigger and wreck the town...that'd also be cool (if somewhat frustrating for Saori).

    Thoughts?

Storm's been known to summon and redirect tornadoes and cyclones in canon and should be able to do the same. I don't think she would attempt interfering with it beyond that...! With the powercap in Luceti though, she could probably nudge it in a direction so that the village is safe? But she won't be able to control where it goes after that!

    Wrong account but

    [personal profile] faithfulflame 2012-10-18 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Right, so Saori tries to weaken it, and then everyone tries to push the weakened tornado away from town. Without the power cap Saori could just turn it right around and out to sea, but with the power cap and the fact that its kind of a shift/event it'd be impossible for her.

Together, they might could send it clear of the town though?

I don't know about this. There are few people down there who'd like for the tornado to go through town and not be handled at all.

Since the tornado's coming tomorrow, though, we should probably try to figure out what everyone is on board with.

Thats why I put up this post, so I didn't do anything that would bother other people.

Saori, one way or another will try and weaken it. It'd be OOC for her not to. Whether or not that changes anything is up to other people, I just put forth the question and the suggestion.

Same, for Ororo! She would make an effort to do something in response - if it's in her capacity to prevent disaster, she's going to do it. She won't sit by and watch it go past :( With great power, etc etc. :x

If the choice was between successfully directing the tornado away from the village and slowing down the tornado, I'd choose slowing down the wind speed because it's more of a compromise for characters who would want their property damaged than redirecting the tornado.

Mind you, I don't have characters who would be affected by the tornado even if it did hit the village on its current course; I just know there's other people who have mentioned wanting damage to buildings in the plaza.
    calmbeforethe: (gratuitous lens flare)

    [personal profile] calmbeforethe 2012-10-18 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Well, how about - I'm not sure how it works for other weather manipulating characters, but Ororo would sense the tornado coming before it hits them! So how about the weather wizards make an announcement over the journals? To warn everyone! And they do what they can to slow it down so everyone has time to prepare as much as they can?

And when it actually hits the village, they do what's within their power to prevent it from causing too much damage! Does that sound okay? :o
    windandrain: (God of Lightning)

    [personal profile] windandrain 2012-10-18 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's ideal for me, as well. I don't want Saori to stop the tornado, because that makes it less fun for other people, but slowing it down to mitigate the damage was what I was suggesting in the first place. Its weather, and weather must not be stopped in her mind, but containing it is certainly a priority. Thats definitely the compromise I'd angle for.

I know its well within Saori's power to just smell the tornado coming. So, a warning definitely is in order.

Oh yeah this. For Aang... especially with the power cap, he doesn't exactly have power that could do much to the tornado, but the tornado is also starting out as a relatively weak F1. So Aang will be following the tornado mostly to do damage control while also engaging in reckless fun trying to glide through the tornado during points where no one's in danger. He will become more serious if the tornado winds up intensifying.

Chiming in a little late, but Rainbow Dash could definitely handle slowing it down. She can fly at hundreds of MPH even with the power cap, and she'd probably do something ridiculous like fly straight into it.

Granted, given that people do want some damage, I'm cool with not having her totally go all out.

Aang, Dash, Saori, and Storm should totally surf it while its away from town.

They could all work together to slow it down a bit so it doesn't get to max speed, and clear people wandering around on the streets out of the way.

If Sabriel gets enough warning before the tornado hits she might be able to put an extra large diamond of protection around someone's house or another building. She'd need help doing so which means she'd have to call on one of the mage group people or something but if anyone would want to make use of her services they can.

Okay, so I'm certainly not a WEATHER EXPERT or anything, but as someone who's grown up in ~tornado alley~ all her life, here's some not so quick basics of what a twistah is like for people near it.

First off, tornadoes are loud. Most people you talk to who've been through one talk about it sounding like a freight train or a super-extended car crash of some sort; they make a lot of low frequency noise and are generally instinctively terrifying for your average human because of this. Animals will be scared. Even with a small one like this, everyone in the village will know something's going on for sure.

Secondly, and of course, tornadoes are windy... something that's not just restricted to like... the exact funnel shape of the tornado (thanks for nothing, Hollywood). The visible part of a tornado is made up of debris- dust, junk, water, etc... and really, it's only possible to see this effect from a distance. It's not like something (or someone) is just fine until the 'edge' of the tornado hits and then that's when everything flings apart or... whatever. e_e; Point is, it will not be safe to be anywhere outside, or near windows or... you know, open doors. People of normal weight will not be able to stand, half because of the wind making it impossible to not be blown over, but because there's going to be debris... which is really the #1 most dangerous part of a tornado.

    ALL OF THAT SAID!!!

This is an F1 tornado, which is only the second highest level above an F0- about 80-110 mph or 130-170 kmh. THIS IS NOT A SUPER DESTRUCTIVE TORNADO! Will there be broken windows? Yes. Overturned sheds? Yes. Roof damage? Yes... but completely ripped off roofs? Prrrobably not. Even if so, it'd just be on the buildings in the immediate path I'd think. The tornado part will also be over pretty quick for any one location. If I'm guessing right, it'd be on and then past a building in only like... 5-10 seconds, tops. And, since it's sounding like there's going to be at least some warning, hopefully nobody is going to be taken by surprise (at least in the immediate path, which seem to be mostly public buildings rather than residential buildings).

    Tornado precautions:
Generally, underground is the best bet, and as far away from windows as it's possible to be, towards the center of the building. Bathrooms are generally considered good because of the usual location-- and because pipes in the walls add more support. Same goes for closets because of the small size; closets under staircases are even better.

If I was someone trying to warn others with short notice, I'd tell 'em to make sure they're wearing shoes but not to waste time looking for them. :F If there's time to tear a mattress off a bed and carry it to a hiding place, putting that overhead is a good choice. Other overhead things? Not so much... shelves with lots of junk on them can be bad news because if the walls shake, stuff can come tumbling down.

Barring all of that, against a wall, kneeling down with your head covered with your hands, is your bet for if there's no other choice. This is at least what they'd always have us do when I was in middle school. Imagine dozens of semi-amused kids practicing this in the hallway, haha. I used to have nightmares about a tornado slowly destroying everything up the hall and sucking kids away... yeah.

And lastly, as sort of a random thought, and for characters who would be pretty familiar with bad storms: sometimes, there's sort of an... aura beforehand. Often the clouds sort of look greenish, and there's a heaviness in the air that makes people familiar with it kind of nervous. Tornadoes are caused by warmer air trapped beneath cooler air, so considering this is October, today will have been warmer than usual and maybe tellingly still before the storm rolls in.

Loki originally put a magical shield on the stables. Then Saori was like HERE HAVE ALL THIS EXTRA POWER so he put something shiny on community house seven as well. Not because he likes you stupid humans, mind you, but because he doesn't want his brain to cook. Just so it's noted.
