Come with me and you'll see a world of pure imagination...

Does your life seem to need just a little more magic to it? It does? Good!

But first of all, let's do all the new friend adds for this cycle. We've got a lot of great new people in the game, so let's not miss out on them! Copy the below in the admin console and get yourself updated. If you are new and not on this list, be sure to comment here with your new character.

Secondly, the weather calendar has finally been updated for this month! Apologies for the delay, but hopefully this should clear up any questions about the upcoming weather.

Thirdly, we're still working on getting the new missions set up. There's no new details yet, but we didn't get to announce them last month like we'd hoped. We aim to have them ready by the time this next event is over. Speaking of which...

Finally, starting on the 25th at midnight (or 12:01 AM to be absolutely clear), a little bit of magic will enter Luceti. Suddenly everything will be just a little bit like a fairy tale!

For the week, everyone in Luceti will suddenly feel compelled to behave a certain way, following classic fairy tale roles. Naruto suddenly finds himself wanting to practice evil sorcery and kidnap princesses - such as Toph Bei Fong. Lucky for her that she can rely on the brave and handsome Prince Charming, aka Elicia Hughes, to come to her rescue. There are plenty more roles to go around. Perhaps Horatio will start hiding under the bridge and begin taking tolls from people crossing it, Dr. McCoy might feel compelled to sneak into people's homes and repair their shoes, or Sheena might decide she need to break into someone's apartment and find the porridge that's just right for her.

While under the experiment's effects, characters will be consciously aware of what's going on and are free to try and resist it all they like. But the more they don't do it, the more difficult it will be to not just give in. Fortunately once they reach their 'Happily Ever After' (the end of their story), they'll go back to normal. Unless, of course, they get wrapped up in a new story. For as long as they are stuck in a fairy tale (which can strike at random and out of the blue), they'll be stuck in the appropriate costume and unable to get rid of it until their story ends.

As for the roles characters can play, be creative! Anything from fairy tales are acceptable. Classic fables and stories are acceptable too. Becoming the 'monster under the bed' is perfectly acceptable. We won't begrudge you throwing in a bit of Shakespeare too. Just note that these will only cause people to act as their role intends them to, but they won't get any special powers or skills from it, though a bit of shape changing may occur to better fit the role (such as gaining horns, a mermaid's tail, and so on). If their story involves some magical item (such as a magic lamp), then some mundane object can fill the role (such as a shoe), but the will be compelled to act as if that item is indeed special.

For ideas on what kind of roles to play, consider looking at classic tropes and archetypal characters in fairy tales. (Warning: we're not responsible for the hours you may lost to clicking the previous links.) For other ideas, just look at some classic fairy tales like these or go find some of your own. There's tons to work with!

Just remember, the bad guy always loses in the end! And that many Happily Ever Afters end with being Happily Married.

Questions and comments are welcome below. Feel free to do any plotting you want to do all in here. Have fun! It all ends at midnight on the 2nd (or 11:59PM on the 1st). Don't all fairy tales?

Oh wow, how perfectly convenient XD

As a newbie and a player of one, how will this affect characters who are already fairy tale characters? Would Beast turn into more the classic Beast from his tale, or would he suddenly have the urge to go blow down a straw house?

Can our characters turn into animals from fairy tales? Like if someone wanted to be the Big Bad Wolf from Red Riding Hood as an example.

The shapeshifting would probably be a little more subtle than a complete change. Like maybe gaining wolf ears and tail. If people want to go all the way, they can, or they can throw them into a cheap wolf costume.

Should characters stick to one fairy tale for the whole event or can they go through multiple if they reach their Happily Ever Afters fast enough?
markofthewise: (Satisfaction)

[personal profile] markofthewise 2011-09-23 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yup! A Happily Ending plot could last all of one hour in-game. So if they go through several, that's fine. Or they could keep getting stuck in the same role over and over.

Would characters still recognize each other? Say, if Sheena becomes Goldilocks, would whichever chars become the Three Bears still recognize her as Sheena?

Yeah. Even though they're compelled to play their roles, they're still basically their normal selves. They might be compelled to start acting in character, but all of their own thoughts and memories will be in tact.

I doubt this will come to fruition, but how much can we twist these fairy tales?

Generally speaking, most of them should be like the original tales. But there's always room to sneak in a few unexpected deviations.

SO DIST IS TINKERBELL.

Meaning he will sparkle 276% more than he usually does.

I'm just wondering if, say, he threw a handful of glittery fairy dust at someone, they'd be able to fly? Or, if that's not acceptable, maybe hover off the ground a foot or so? Just so long as they think happy thoughts~

If that's not okay, it's perfectly fine, since the image of him prancing around throwing glitter and pretending to fly is equally appealing.
markofthewise: (Chin scratcher)

[personal profile] markofthewise 2011-09-23 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, like above, people don't actually get any powers. But they'll sure think they do. So if he spreads his magic dust, then people will be compelled to spread their arms and run around acting as if they are flying.

[identity profile] refinedmaestro.livejournal.com 2011-09-23 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
You say classic fables and stories are acceptable, but are things from Greek legends also acceptable?
markofthewise: (Lemur think about it)

[personal profile] markofthewise 2011-09-23 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's fine, though please avoid stuff that heavily involves gods and religion, because that steps a bit too much into real world stuff. But if you wanna play out something like being Odysseus or Medusa, that's fine.

I THOUGHT I HAD A HANDLE ON THIS EVENT but I have reached a snaffoo.

OKAY SO up there in your mermaid example. You're like "a tail is cool". But does this also mean that when a character thinks they are now a water-breather that needs to sleep in the bathtub that night it is suddenly a drowning hazard? ....Because as much as that makes me lol, I'm not sure if that's intended. XD

[personal profile] markofthewise 2011-09-23 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think the easy answer here is... deal with that problem how you want. Though bear in mind the Malnosso aren't trying to kill or seriously harm anyone with this experiment. If they have a mermaid tail, breathing underwater is fine. It's just in terms of powers, don't expect the sorcerer character to suddenly gain new magic powers.

gfjdkh I was planning on having Legato be turned into a kid with most of his cast for that week, which is already going to screw with him a bunch.

Trying to have him be his kid self AND under the influence of fairytaling seems like... a lot. Is there an opt-out option of any kind, maybe? To where he wouldn't be fairytaled, but would still be able to interact with the people who are?

idk, I don't know what to do. x_x

Is it possible by chance to have someone be in two roles at one time in two different stories? Like while they are off hunting for their princess they happen to come upon a story needing a minor role to be filled and get grabbed to fill that quickly and then when they are done they continue with their previous role?

Sure, if you can make it work, go for it.

Question: is this restricted to Western fairy tales, or would archetypes and characterizations from, say, Chinese folklore be acceptable?
