How's My Driving?

This is a crit post for both the community and game and for your characters. If you have something you'd like to see us improve upon with the game, PLEASE TELL US HERE! Anon commenting is on, but if anything gets really nasty there will be warnings and thread-freezing. This isn't required but everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the advice of your fellow players!

Just some pointers: no taking cheap shots, no dragging personal issues into things and for the love of all that is wise and great, please double check your replies and comments before posting them. Sometimes a change in phrasing can make all the difference between a helpful tone and a condescending one.

ALSO ALSO: We'd like to clarify that HMD means HMD- which means it's okay to have both good and bad crit. Some people have expressed concerns about posting good/bad crit when a character already has bad/good crit posted. We'd like to encourage you guys to do it anyway! You can drive well or badly, and even good drivers make mistakes. So give it a try \o

You guys listen to your playerbase, and it shows. Especially with the current developments concerning Bil's death, the last mission, and Kin'Corras. They all had great plots that made the players interested on them stay on their feet and think with their heads. Hell, the discovery of the wall was brilliant and world-shattering for so many characters. It's all been a great ride.

You have not only listened to the petitions of a players for movement, but you've kept track of our actions for not only plot events, but missions, actions within the enclosure, and everything. You've made the game feel incredibly vivid, but at the same time offering things for those that may still be interested in slice of life or minor events.

Thank you so much for being our mods and for all the work and love you have given into this game. It makes me so happy to be in this game because of you guys.

dear masa. at long last, you get to be the recipient of one of my 'welcome to the cast' hmd messages.

this past app cycle, i finally roped you into one of my casts. first of all, i want to tell you how excited i am to have you with us in the btvs crew. before now, i certainly valued and enjoyed your commentary as you first watched the show; now, i value and enjoy your contribution as an rper.

it's not a simple canon to app from and of all the characters you could have picked, you went with one of the more convulted, complex, and melodramatic of them all. but from inception to voice-testing to our most recent body-swap plot, i've been on board with the choices you've made for spike. you're hitting just the right note of keeping him independent and self-assured in his role as a champion without ignoring the fact that he also quite often hangs his hopes, cares, and dreams on the shoulders of other people. the conflict between these two aspects of spike's characterization shows up in btvs's visual cues but you portray this emotional conflict within your tags with a stark and effective clarity.

most importantly, i have fun when we tag. and now -- with spike -- i don't end up feeling daunted by the history and baggage our characters share. you're very reasonable to work things out with oocly. for example, you have no idea how spectacular it is that you suggested all on your own that an otherwise potentially cool plot left buffy too 'damselly'. you very often (if not always) have your eye on how to benefit the person you're tagging with; in this way, you're a very generous person when it comes to threading.

your spike voice is crisp and on-point. your sokka is always the definitive rp sokka for me. i don't know your other characters' canons so you'll just have to deal with me ignoring them. but i'll lastly add that i'm always delighted by how you tailor even your character's vocal patterns to how they're developing in luceti: spike's ironic use of the 'bird' endearment is one fine example of this.

i probably have more to say but i think i'm gonna ease off and save any specifics for private conversation. but consider this the official two-month extension of my castemately open arms. i feel quite fortunate to have you with us.

Back in the day with the Brigade, I know I struggled to find something to focus them on before I eventually settled on running party things (which evolved over time to what it is now) and so I'm hoping with a direction picked running it/plotting in Luceti will be easier for you. I think you already know how I feel about Archie, but I wanted to let you know how very much I am enjoying your other two characters. Peeta seems to be so on the money to me. I loved reading his threads on the circus mission especially. And while I don't know the Vorkosigan Saga at all, Gregor seems to me to be a very well-fleshed-out character who reacts in interesting and true-to-character ways to life in Luceti.

i'll try not to get too obnoxiously detailed. mostly, i want to talk about how i appreciate and enjoy the nuance with which you play your characters -- especially jilly. although i've never read her canon, your jilly has such internal consistency and well-contextualized tags that she never comes across as a character i 'don't know enough about to understand' -- if you catch my drift. she is a very sweet and well-meaning character whose story and perspective (in my opinion) add a lot to this game. although she has a very tumultuous background, it's fascinating to watch a character barrel through luceti's setting with such poignant optimism.

faith seems to be jilly's foil on your list of luceti characters, but it's been great to see you tackle that difference and highlight the second slayer's insecurities and fears. the canon-point is a fascinating one! and i am grateful for the fact that you also enjoy a slow-broil build towards reconcilliation between buffy and faith. they both have every right to doubt each other right now and i relish the continued opportunity to have them fumble and glare their way towards an s7-like appreciation of each other and their contributions.

i do know booth's canon but i haven't really seen as much of him around. i know you struggle with his voice but when he is around, he does come across as (for the most part) authentic. of course, i haven't seen every single thread ever but i wonder if sometimes he might be too kind on the surface? booth has a very deep kindness and selflessness but he can be very impatient and brusque in his moment-to-moment interactions. if i've just not stalked enough and have missed that behaviour and perhaps only accidentally ended up biased, please let me know!

the only note i want to end on is that i know you can sometimes be overwhelmed by what's going on in the game and where your threads are at, considering you lead a busy professional life! that's entirely understandable, but i want you to know that my plurk is always open for chatting and planning and even handwaving if there's anything you would like to tidy up.

Marbles, I just have to say thank you for bearing with me lately. I know that our CR has been bumpy and filled with potholes, but I'm certain it'll be very, very rewarding when Saori and Ororo can get past their initial O.O at one another.

And you've mentioned it as a worry, about putting too much of 616 Ororo into Evo!Ororo. I think that it's definitely something to watch for, because while the characters are similar Evo!Ororo never felt quite so imperious and regal as 616. It's come out a little bit in our tags, and it makes sense, but just be careful about possible bleed-over into other interactions.

Okay after doing some action threads, fight threads in particular with you (during the Kin'cora affair, that fight Luke and Rin had, Mars and Masaomi in the one mission, I feel like there were others) I think I've confidently nailed down something which bothers me about your playing style. I'm sort of assuming/hoping that if it bothers me it'll be bothering others too so it's something you ought to think about at least.

Anyway, from those threads and other threads where characters are just talking and spitballing ideas, it seems you're very enamored with your characters' various superpowers. This isn't inherently a bad thing, but I've found an offshot of that to be awkward in fight threads I've had with you-- I can't fairly call it godmodding (because, at least in my threads, it has mostly been lording over NPCs) but I've noticed you write them with this sense of clipped efficiency of using superpower/ability X to override situation Y and the end result is that that the fight threads I've had with you either lose their dramatic tension or fall on the other player (in this case, me) to maintain it.

It is possible this is just me, but I would urge you to look back on some old action/fight thread bits and see what you think.

Heya Belle! I'm not a particular expert in Fantastic Four canon but I've been enjoying our thread with Ben and Selphie so much. Whenever I get a reply from him, I find myself thinking that that's how Ben should sound like. I really do feel that you're doing a great job with him. :)

And for Zevran, I'm essentially canonblind to Dragon Age but I've enjoyed our threads with him as well. He reminds me of one of Selphie's canonmates but a lot more confident and without a cowboy hat. ^^

I don't think I've had the pleasure of threading with Aang (or Troy for that matter), but Lee. I've been in games a long time ago with people who played him, and I don't think that I could ever compare them to yours. He's so wonderful and wonderfully IC that when I get threads with him I feel like he's the one doing the typing. That's how awesome you do him.
